The Full Story
Horton Laboratory, established in 1935, is a family owned and operated removable laboratory located in Wilson, NC. James Frederick "Fred" Horton Sr., founder of Horton Laboratory, started his training as a dental technician at the age of nineteen at Guy Bruton's Kinston Dental Laboratory. Through the depression, his training continued, although reduced in financial benefits. Fred supplemented his income at this time by becoming an undertaker's assistant after working hours.
In the fall of 1935 Mr. Horton, forced into decision by the needs of a growing family, reluctantly left Kinston Laboratory and moved back to his hometown of Wilson, where he bought out a laboratory. Thus became the beginning of Horton Laboratory.
James F. "Skip" Horton Jr., CDT was the second generation of Horton Laboratory. Skip worked with his dad prior to and following his tour of duty in the US Army. He bought the lab from his dad in 1968 following his dad's retirement.
Horton Laboratory remained a member of the NCDLA during the time Skip was the owner "because of the education, fellowship and keeping up with the current events in the Laboratory field", Skip said. Like his father Fred (1965-1966), Skip served as President of the NCDLA in 1974-1975 as well as several other offices. He was chosen to receive the "Key Man" award in 1971-1972 and again in 1976-1977 "in appreciation of his leadership, devotion and outstanding service to the NCDLA". His father Fred also received the award in 1968-69.
